Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival 2019 (YGF) is an international meeting to communicate and interact with gamelan lovers and also a space to help the public get involved in the world of gamelan by strengthening the potential realized in various activities such as concerts, workshops, exhibitions, seminars and talk shows. YGF itself has been formed since 1995 by the Gayam 16 community in collaboration with the DIY Culture Office, YGF has become a media to express and appreciate more than 200 gamelan groups spread across 36 countries.
This year the 24th YGF is held by the Gayam 16 Community and DIY Culture Office with the theme "New Gamelan". This event will be held on 19-24 August. This theme is taken from a sentence once mentioned by the late Sapto Raharjo, that gamelan is spirit, instruments are only the median. Sapto Raharjo is the first gamelan maestro and initiator of YGF. The purpose of this theme is that Gamelan Spirit must be presented in a new way or style and can adapt to current developments.
This event is a bit different from previous years, YGF 2019 will be held at Plaza Ngasem Yogyakarta as the main Venue accompanied by 3 other venues. This event will last for 6 full days. The agenda of the 2019 Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival as follows;
1. Gaung Gamelan
Gaung Gamelan is the opening event of the Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival which will be held on Monday, August 19, 2019. The event is located in the 0 kilometer area of Yogyakarta, located in the opposite the General Offensive Monument on March 1. The event is titled 'Gending' where the players will play Cakepan Santi Mulyo. This music is not only centered in the 0 Kilometer area of Yogyakarta, but is also played in 4 cardinal directions and 17 cultural villages throughout Yogyakarta. Gending will start at 3.00 p.m to finish.2. Rembug Budaya
Rembug Budaya is an open discussion agenda that will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 in the Wayang Ukur Museum, Tamansiswa, Yogyakarta. This event will take place at 3.00 p.m to finish.3. Workshop
This workshop is planned to work together with Limbah Bunyi community and will be held in the Gayam 16 Community, which is located in Mantrigawen Lor, Yogyakarta. In this event participants will be taught to recycle waste into new types of gamelan. This event also takes place on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at 15:00 until completion.4. Performance
This is the last event and the main event of the Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival 2019 series which is located in Plaza Ngasem Yogyakarta takes place on 22 to 24 August 2019 starting at 19.00.There will be 12 performers both from within the city, outside the city, to abroad. Overseas gamelan performers who will also join are gamelan from Japan, France, and Germany.
