I posted this on Instagram last night and I got a lot of questions. This dress is from Gap Kids. I actually frequently shop in the kids department. It sounds weird, but there are some really cute items and most brand's largest size is pretty equivalent to a size 2 in women's. You just have to be careful when selecting pieces because the proportions are off 90% of the time... which makes sense considering they're made for children. But every once in a while I will find something perfect and the price is always inexpensive!
I usually wear the XXL in Gap Kids which is a 14/16, it almost always fits, but every once in a while I size down to the XL or, most frequently, the proportions don't work for an adult's body. The dress in the above photo is an XXL and was plenty large enough but I wouldn't have sized down due to the proportions. I am 5'6" and about 125 pounds (on a good day) so a lot of children's stuff is too short or too tight in the rear but I get lucky sometimes. If possible, have my tailor let the hem out, too! I would say this probably wouldn't work for someone who is busty or uber tall!
Other places with great kid's clothing:
Ralph Lauren- I wear an XL 16 in girls and the same in boys-- the XL 18/20 is very large... would be perfect as a swimsuit coverup.
Brooks Brothers- I wear the largest girls size and the boys sizes are huge. A 14 is usually plenty big.
Crewcuts- The girl's section is almost always too small but the boys largest size is great!
Do you have any favorite kids shopping tips or are you reading this thinking I am insane... Ok, maybe don't tell me! Have a fabulous day!
